Sorabora Wewa

Back to Places to Visit

Sorabora Wewa is an ancient reservoir in Mahiyanganaya, traditionally believed to have been built during the reign of King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BC — making it a striking example of the advanced hydraulic engineering of ancient Sri Lanka's "tank" civilization, which relied on vast networks of reservoirs to support rice cultivation across the dry zone. Today the wewa (reservoir) is a tranquil spot ringed by greenery, popular for birdwatching, boat rides, and simply taking in the scenery — a peaceful contrast to its role as a centuries-old feat of engineering.
